🛰️ We cannot preserve what we cannot measure. There is an urgent need to understand the location, health and ecological value of nature and biodiversity, and ensure these metrics are reflected in policy, finance, and decision-making.
Current methods for monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) of community-provided ecosystem services are mostly based on on-ground inspection which is too expensive (USD 20-30k), delayed (up to two years), corruptible and biased.
Artificial intelligence can play a significant role in responding to this critical call for action and can accelerate the conservation and sustainable use of our natural world. We have developed and are working together with platforms that leverage intelligent algorithms to provide ecological insights and track sustainable stewardship around the world.
✅ Five reasons.
1. Low transaction fees. Transaction fees for tokens on Solana are around 0.00041 USD for an arbitrary transaction amount of money.
2. Instant processing time. The transaction fees determine the speed of processing, enabling funds to be transferred within 1 min.
3. Decentralisation and inclusion. Cryptocurrencies are decentralised and therefore censorship resistant. Users have full control of their respective funds and only require an internet connection to manage and receive funds.
4. Radical transparency. Every transaction is immutable and visibly recorded on a public ledger. There are no hidden fees and smart contracts can provable enforce that donations are only released when a certain impact has been verified.
5. Supercharging donations. Unused funds earn real-time interest, enabling donors to maximise their impact at any given point in time. Local communities have new ways and incentives of raising donations such as selling NFTs, governance tokens etc.

📝 A smart contract is a self-executing contract with the terms of the agreement between buyer and seller being directly written into lines of code. If certain conditions are true (e.g. we can computationally measure that you preserve forest area above a certain threshold), then the smart contract will automatically execute the agreed upon transaction without the need of a potentially biased third-party. This provides trust, transparency and full auditability.
♻️ As in many cases, first generation technologies are energy inefficient. In blockchain, proof-of-work consensus currently requires a lot of electricity power. Instead, GainForest NFTrees is using Solana and proof-of-stake (PoS) to mitigate more 99.99% of emissions (current electricity cost of Wikipedia). Furthermore NFTrees are more environmental friendlier in the long term than normal NFTs as conservation projects receive a continuous stewardship fee from their holders. That means, that projects don't have to mine new NFTs which would cost a lot of electricity.
In the near future, PoS and more modern consensus algorithms (second generation) will become more mainstream and drastically reduce the environmental impact and make the system much more sustainable on all blockchains. We focus our development of GainForest on systems with a clear path to proof-of-stake or similar.

NFTrees are non-fungible tokens (NFT) with a little twist (more in the whitepaper) that can be auctioned in Solana marketplaces. Profits from sales are channeled to the issuing partner projects.
